PROCEDURE TO SYNCHRONIZE SERVERS AND
COMPUTERS WITH THE OFFICIAL TIME OF CHILE
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
The first step to synchronize the time of servers and personal computers with the Official Time of Chile through the NTP Time Server is to check the time zone of your system.
Our country for continental zone in summer time is UTC-03 and during winter UTC-04. For the insular zone, in summer time is UTC-05 and during winter is UTC-06.
Microsoft operating systems recognize our country as GMT/UTC-04 Santiago. Even versions older than Microsoft Windows Vista define our winter time as a standard time and change automatically the time zone the second Saturday of March and the second Saturday of October when is activated the box that says: “Automatically adjust clock to…” From the Microsoft Windows Vista version, the dialog box date/time properties is more intuitive, since it indicates the start and end dates of the time and other facilities.
Microsoft does not consider our insular zone on the list, so if you live in that area you must use the time zone of a city equivalent to that time zone. The difference between the continental and insular time of Chile is always 2 hours. When in the Continental territory of Chile time changes on Saturdays at 24 hours, in the insular territory of Chile it is changed at 22 hours.
Operating Systems *are very similar with respect to the properties of date and time of Microsoft XP or superior. The difference is that depending on the distribution, our country is designated America/Santiago and Easter Island is Pacific/Easter. The list of cities and indication to frameworks of time in these operating systems are very versatile and superior.
- The time server ntp.shoa.cl is based on the UTC reference.
- The ntp.shoa.cl server through the NTP protocol will carry out the corrections of time, according to the time zone of your computer.
- The NTP protocol does not modify the time zone of clients.
Below it is specified the procedure for each platform:
Equipment using Windows 9x/98SE/ME/2000 Operating System. NT3.51/4/2000 Server
Use programs free of charge that can be downloaded from the Internet, for instance AboutTime, or similar, adding ntp.shoa.cl to your servers’ list (see example). If you have a Firewall, you must have allowed the access IO on port 123/UDP (Protocol sntp). |
| |
Equipment using Windows XP/Vista Operating System
It is not necessary to install any external program. On the tab of properties of Date and Time, add only to the list ntp.shoa.cl
It is important to have in mind that only Administrators and Advanced Users can change the date and time. To be able to do it from a limited user account, which is most normally used, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Local Policies > User Rights Assignments. Where it says Change the System Time, add the name of the limited account.
To synchronize big convergent webs of Microsoft domains is advisable to use the following criterion:
1- Synchronize the PDC server or Active Directory with the time server.
2- Synchronize the clients with the time PDC server or Active Directory through proprietary protocols such as the time service of Windows W32Time. You can also use scripts with # net time commands.
Remember that Microsoft bases security aspects on the web time |

Equipment using MAC OSX Operating System
It is not necessary to install an external program. It is similar to Windows XP. On the tab of date/time properties, add on the list only ntp.Shoa.cl
| |
Equipment using Unix/Linux (*NIX)
From the command line:
NTP services must be started, through the following procedure:
1. Edit file; /etc/ntp.conf and add line: server ntp.shoa.cl
2. Test the connection through the command: ntpdate ntp.shoa.cl Which will result in the synchronization of time with the server 01 May 10:52:29 ntpdate[16699]: step time server ntp.shoa.cl offset -3.456078 sec
3. Start the ntp service, with the command: service ntpd start.
From the graphic interface:
Validate the service from the window to adjust date and time, by adding as ntp server ntp.shoa.cl and activating the ntp service (select Use ntp server).
